Summer Break Is Here: Don't Forget About the Dog
School's out.
For many Central Oregon families, that means lake days, river floats, vacations, camps, backyard barbecues, and spontaneous adventures with friends. Summer is one of the best times of year to make memories, enjoy the outdoors, and take advantage of everything Bend has to offer.
But while your family's routine changes overnight, your dog's needs don't.
In fact, many dogs experience more excitement, stimulation, and schedule changes during the summer months than any other time of year. Kids are home. Visitors come and go. Vacations interrupt routines. Walk schedules become inconsistent. Before long, many dogs start showing signs of excess energy, restlessness, or boredom.
The good news? It doesn't take much to help maintain balance.
Consistent exercise provides dogs with both physical activity and mental enrichment. A regular weekly run helps burn off energy, reduce boredom, and create a healthy routine that dogs can depend on—even when the rest of the family's calendar feels anything but predictable.
While you're floating the Deschutes River, heading to the lake, attending summer camps, or enjoying an afternoon with friends, your dog can still enjoy their routine.
One of the biggest compliments we hear from families is simple:
"We came home to a tired dog."
A tired dog often means a calmer dog. A calmer dog often means a happier household.
Summer is meant to be enjoyed. The goal isn't to choose between family fun and your dog's needs. With a little planning, you can have both.
As summer officially begins here in Bend, remember that even one consistent activity each week can make a meaningful difference in your dog's overall happiness and well-being.
While you're enjoying summer, your dog can enjoy their routine too.
