Frequently Asked Questions

  • When starting treadmill training, it’s important to understand that not all dogs will immediately feel comfortable or confident enough to run. Just like humans, dogs need time to adjust to new experiences and environments. Some dogs may be initially hesitant or nervous, which is completely normal. The key to success is progressing at a pace that works for your dog, ensuring they feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout the process. The three stages to help guide your dog’s treadmill journey are as follows: 1) Introduction & Confidence Building. 2) Independent Movement & Endurance Development. 3) Advanced Training & Optimal Well-Being.

  • We follow a gentle, three-stage approach to ensure your dog’s experience is safe, positive, and rewarding:

    • Stage One: Introduction & Confidence Building
Dogs may be hesitant at first, and that’s okay. We focus on patience and consistency, allowing your dog to explore the Slatmill at their own pace. The goal here is comfort, not speed—every dog progresses differently.

    • Stage Two: Independent Movement & Endurance Development
Once your dog is comfortable, they’ll begin walking or running on their own. During this stage, we help build endurance and encourage steady, confident movement throughout the session.

    • Stage Three: Advanced Training & Optimal Well-being
Now that your dog is confident and consistent, we can introduce challenges like incline and resistance to further enhance physical fitness and mental focus—boosting overall health and happiness.

  • Firepaw slatmills are high‑end mechanical dog treadmills (slatmills) specifically designed for canine conditioning, endurance training, rehabilitation, and competitive performance. They are non‑motorized, meaning the dog controls the pace naturally with their own running motion — making them different from traditional electric treadmills

The custom-built slatmill gives your dog a safe, low-impact, full-body workout—perfect for burning energy, building strength, and boosting mental focus. It helps reduce anxiety and boredom, supports training and rehab, and keeps your pup moving rain or shine. Whether your dog’s full of energy or working through recovery, the slatmill offers a focused, fun way to stay healthy, happy, and well-behaved.

    🔒 Firepaw Slatmill Safety Features

    1. Non-Motorized Design (Dog-Controlled Speed)

    • The slatmill moves only when your dog moves.

    • There is no motor pulling them forward, eliminating the risk of forced speed or overexertion.

    • Your dog naturally self-regulates without stress or pressure.

    2. Precision-Balanced Running Wheels

    • Firepaw’s low-friction running wheels create a smooth, consistent, low-impact stride.

    • Reduces joint stress and supports natural gait patterns.

    • Ideal for dogs recovering conditioning, building strength, or needing safer repetition.

    3. Individual Slats

    • Crafted for shock absorption and smooth motion.

    • Slats flex in harmony with your dog’s stride, creating a low-impact surface far gentler than pavement.

    • Minimizes strain on joints, ligaments, and developing bodies.

    • Plastic belts are often preferred by dog fitness centers, rehabilitation facilities, and indoor training gyms

    • Sinigficantly lower noise levels, with minimal vibration.

    • Highly resistant to moisture and weather, making them a great choice for multi-dog environments and all-weather conditions

    4. Safety Rails & Guard Panels

    • Side rails keep your dog centered and secure.

    • Clear visibility so your dog feels safe, not confined.

    • Prevents slipping or drifting during higher-energy runs.

    5. Adjustable Hand Brake (Manual Resistance Control)

    • Allows your Bend Barks & Rec cheerleader to move around with total control as well as add gentle resistance as needed.

    • Supports controlled strength-building without overdoing it.

    • Perfect for senior dogs, athlete dogs, and dogs needing a confidence-building pace.

    6. Spring-Loaded Front Harness Support

    • Specialized harness springs absorb momentum and prevent forward jolting.

    • Gives your dog support without restricting movement.

    • Ideal for dogs who are new to slatmills, nervous, or building balance.

    • Each dog gets fitted to the correct harness size. We use RuffWear harnesses for all our runners, if you do not have one.

    • Provides steady, comfortable guidance without pressure points.

    8. Non-Slip Running Surface

    • Ensures safe traction during slow walks, trots, and sprints.

    • Great for dogs of all mobility levels.

    9. Climate-Controlled Van Environment

    • No distractions, no weather extremes, no slippery surfaces.

    • A stable, professional gym setting—designed for safety first.

    • Equipped with heat, A/C, fans and air filter (for “fire season” air quality”)

Its shock-absorbing design protects your dog’s joints while improving strength, stamina, and speed—whether for fitness, rehab, or training. With smooth custom wheels, a quiet running belt, safety-focused features, and easy handling, it’s a top-tier treadmill trusted by pros across the world and perfect for dogs of all fitness levels.

  • That’s totally normal! Since the Slatmill is non-motorized, your dog can ease into it at their own pace. We start with gentle walks to build comfort and confidence, and over time they naturally pick up speed. Whether it’s a calm stroll or an energizing sprint, each session is tailored to your dog’s needs—helping release energy, improve focus, and support a happier, more balanced life—all in a safe, weather-proof environment.

Every mile we run together keeps tails wagging and hope moving forward. 🐾

This mission comes from the heart of our founder, Stefanie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35. She experienced firsthand the emotional lift a happy, exercised dog can bring, even on the hardest days. Today, that experience fuels our passion to give back to others walking a similar path.

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us bring joy and movement to dogs whose families need a little extra support right now.

Together, we’re building a stronger, kinder community — one run, one wag, and one act of compassion at a time.
