Memorial Day weekend is often considered the unofficial start of summer here in Central Oregon. School is almost out, calendars start filling up with BBQs, camping trips, visitors, and long weekends at the lake. While we all look forward to the fun, the sudden change in routine can sometimes leave our dogs feeling a little out of sync too.

Dogs thrive on consistency. Even with exciting weekends and busy schedules, maintaining regular exercise and structure helps keep them calm, balanced, and happier at home. A dog who has an outlet for their energy is often more relaxed during family gatherings, road trips, or those long summer evenings spent outside.

This time of year is also when many families begin adjusting to summer schedules. Mid-week exercise can make a huge difference, especially as routines become less predictable. A regular Wednesday run or walk can help break up the week, provide mental stimulation, and give dogs something consistent to look forward to — even when life gets busy.

At Bend Barks & Rec, we’ve seen firsthand how much dogs benefit from having a dependable routine. Whether it’s a young energetic pup, a working breed that needs a job, or simply a dog who loves their weekly run, those small consistent moments create healthier habits that last all summer long.

As we head into the holiday weekend, we also want to take a moment to remember what Memorial Day is truly about. We are incredibly grateful for the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country, and we thank all military families and veterans for their service.

As a small thank you from Bend Barks & Rec, veterans who sign up this Memorial Day weekend will receive 10% off any runs or packages.

Wishing everyone a safe, happy, and adventure-filled Memorial Day weekend with your families, both two-legged and four-legged.
